Canada's venture capital industry shattered all records in 2000. Over $6bn was invested, reflecting a 132 per cent increase on 1999. This report is a summary of the key trends for the year, by Macdonald & Associates for the Canadian Venture Capital Association Canadian venture capital broke almost every industry record in 2000. From the amount of capital invested to the pace of investing in the final quarter. Pivotal to this milestone year was an intense focus by the industry on large deals involving technology companies, with investments in communications growing by 280 per cent. The final quarter of the year accounted for one-third of total capital invested and contributed substantially to the impressive final result.
Foreign and institutional investors increased their influence in the industry. They were responsible for nearly half of all capital invested in 2000 and demonstrated the attractiveness of the Canadian technology sectors to this type of investor.
Despite the downturn in public markets in the early part of 2001, the Canadian venture capital industry appears confident and according to this report should be able to ‘...weather the storm'.
