Venture capital funds in India have more than doubled from US$320m in 1999 to US$750m in 2000. Here, Nishith Desai Associates explains how the recent boom in the technology sector has awakened India's venture capital industry.
The Indian venture capital industry has grown significantly since 1996, largely as a result of the recent boom in the technology industry. With VC firms now looking to invest in new sectors such as healthcare and biotechnology, this growth is expected to continue in the coming years.
The Indian government's efforts to develop venture capital investment in order to promote industrial growth have resulted in regulatory changes that affect both domestic and offshore investors. The main issues are outlined here.
