The Australian Venture Capital Association (AVCAL) has for some time been working with the Australian government to create an international competitive environment for investment in the Australian venture capital industry. These efforts intensified over the last 6 months and culminated in a detailed submission being made. The submission recommended the adoption of a limited liability partnership (LLP) as the appropriate vehicle for venture capital investment in Australia and also made certain key recommendations about the taxation treatment of the LLP structure.
As a consequence of these efforts the Australian government has announced a tax reform package that will apply from 1 July 2002. The centrepiece of the reform package is the introduction of a venture capital liability partnership (VC LLP). This AVCAL brief outlines the features of a VC LLP and the tax attributes of such investment vehicles
