Canadian venture capital set new records in 2000. The total amount of capital invested neared the $5bn mark by the end of the third quarter. Despite strong growth, statistics show that Canada continues to lag behind its southern rival – the US. These quarterly reports by Macdonald & Associates chart the rise and development of the Canadian venture capital industry in the year 2000, assessing investment totals, disbursement levels, key sectors and key players.
The year 2000 saw Canadian VCs deploying capital at an impressive rate. Technology companies drew the greatest share of venture capital investment, with the internet, computer software, communications and electronics sectors taking centre stage. Many companies secured follow-on financings, with semiconductor firm Hyperchip receiving an incredible $100m.
Despite lagging behind the US market, the overall feeling is one of optimism, encouraged by the aggressive spurt in VC growth.
