The Canadian venture capital industry grew healthily in 1999, according to figures released by the Canadian Venture Capital Association. After a remarkable year, the signs are that Canada is becoming an increasingly sophisticated VC market.
This annual report by the Canadian Venture Capital Association discusses the statistics and the trends affecting the Canadian VC market in 1999. Capital investment rose to C$2.7bn, deal activity was diverse and the size of transactions increased. By the beginning of 1999, the amount of venture capital under management in Canada had increased to C$12bn, up 20 per cent on the previous year. But despite such an impressive increase in the amount of cash available for investment, the number of financings actually fell during this period.
Overall, the statistics show that VC firms were ploughing larger amounts of money into fewer companies - targeting, in particular, players in the innovative technology sector.
