Although the South African private equity market has seen significant expansion in recent years, investors are dragging their heels when it comes to investing in seed and start-up ventures. Drawing on a variety of sources, this University of Cape Town report assesses the state of the VC industry in South Africa. This report looks at the key issues affecting the industry - size and growth, specific industry sectors, sources of funding and fund structures. The South African private equity industry has around R20bn worth of funds available for investment, according to most estimates. But early-stage capital accounts for just six per cent of total private equity commitments. An increasing amount of capital is undrawn, with too much money and too few deals.
