Spanish private equity is becoming increasingly important in the European market. Here, Jose Marti of the University of Madrid explains how the industry has evolved and looks at the current environment – from fund sources and investment patterns to exit opportunities. Venture capital in Spain began as a tool for the government to allocate money for regional development. But Spain has followed its European neighbours, as private players swell the market and increasing numbers of foreign investors flock to the country. There are now over 400bn pesetas under management - double that available in 1996 - and in 1999, over €630m was raised. The number of private equity firms participating and investing in the market continues to grow, with over 50 currently resident. This report gives institutional investors a clear insight as to why Spanish private equity is worth a closer look.
