Private equity is a relatively small asset class in South Africa both in relation to other traditional asset classes and compared to the size of the market elsewhere. There is an estimated R10-15bn currently invested with as many as 50 players. Marcia Klein from the Sunday Times newspaper in South Africa looks at the emerging market. Investors should be cautious about committing money to a region that is in its infancy. Working with fund managers who have little or no track record combined with little economic growth spells uncertainty.
