The Irish venture capital industry has been unable to escape the downturn that has characterised the global market, says the Ireland venture capital report by the Irish Venture Capital Association and law firm Matheson Ormsby Prentice.
Irish venture capital firms invested E208m in 2000. This figure dropped significantly in 2001 to E124m. However, it still represents a significant increase from 1997 levels where the total transaction value stood at E39m. Technology was the dominant sector in 2001, attracting E95.3m of venture capital funding.
