The year 2000 and the first half of 2001 were characterised by an increasing trend towards global consolidation. This resulted in unprecedented M&A activity in Australia. While Australian targets constitute just three per cent of the global M&A market, Australia is the seventh most active M&A market in the world.  Political stability, the legal framework and the relatively high degree of market sophistication continue to mean that Australia is seen as an attractive market for foreign purchasers and investors.
