The first half of 2002 showed a marked decline in the Brazilian venture capital industry when compared with the previous year. But there are some positive signs with a natural selection process now occurring in the country, according to Stratus Investimentos. There are fewer funds, more experienced and committed teams, and possibly more deals.
The 19 deals announced in H1 2002 was 49 per cent down on the year before, at 37. In terms of value the period also showed a decline, from $470m in 2001 to $131m in 2002, a drop of 72 per cent. The average deal size also suffered, down 28 per cent to $6.9m, due to a higher number of investments in smaller companies as well as the devaluation of the Brazilian Real.
