Total US venture capital report 2003

The US venture capital market experienced a significant decline last year when compared to 2001. The weakening economy, however, did allow many investors to take advantage of opportunities in companies at favourable valuations, according to Growthink's annual report.

Just over $24.6bn was invested in 2,368 private US-based companies in 2002. This is a sizeable decrease on 2001's figures, which saw 3,528 companies receive a total of $45bn. The Bay area continued to dominate activity, attracting 32 per cent of all money invested in 670 transactions. The battle of the sectors was once again won by connectivity, with $9.6bn invested in 775 companies. As with 2001, healthcare put in another strong showing with 542 companies raising a total of $6.3bn.
