Recent venture capital activity in India is analysed by Indian VC research house TSJ Media. It finds that venture capital and private equity firms announced investments of over US $94 million in 9 Indian companies during the quarter ending September 2004.
The amount invested during the latest quarter was significantly lower compared to same period last year (during which 12 companies had raised over $170 million) as well as the April-June 2004 quarter (which had witnessed 15 investments totalling $180 million).
The latest quarter witnessed at least 5 companies raising more than $10 million. Investment acitivity was spread out across sectors ranging from BPO to cosmetic products.
The single largest investment during the latest quarter was the $35 million invested by Temasek Capital and WestBridge Capital Partners in ICICI OneSource (I-OneSource), a Mumbai-based provider of BPO services and a part of the ICICI Bank group.
