Recent venture capital activity in India is analysed by Indian VC research house TSJ Media. It finds that venture capital and private equity firms announced investments of over US $94 million in 9 Indian companies during the quarter ending September 2004. The amount invested during the latest quarter was significantly higher compared to same period last year (during which 10 companies had raised about $243 million) as well as the July-September 2004 quarter (which had witnessed just 8 investments totaling less than $90 million).
The latest quarter witnessed 17 companies raising more than $10 million. Investment activity was spread out across sectors ranging from manufacturing to pharmaceuticals to engineering & construction services companies. Late stage investments continued to dominate with as many as 13 investments during the quarter going into publicly-listed companies.
