This briefing highlights recent changes to competition law in Hungary, says Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, as it seeks to harmonise its legislation with EU rules. The Hungarian parliament adopted a significant amendment to the 1996 Hungarian Competition Act (HCA) in July 2004. The amendment aims to eliminate inconsistencies between the HCA and EU competition law provisions, as well as to ensure more effective and dynamic competition law enforcement in Hungary. The majority of the amendments will enter into force on 1 November 2005, but the amendment abolishing individual exemptions took effect in July 2005. complies with the individual exemption criteria or with a block exemption regulation.
