Aureos, a private equity fund manager that specialises in emerging markets, is in the process of launching a Latin America Fund that will be exclusively focused on investment in small and medium-sized companies in the region. In this article, Erik Peterson, head of the Aureos Latin America Fund, talks about investment opportunities in Latin America. The financial sector in the region is changing with the recent consolidation and entry by large global players, but it remains to be seen whether that trend will mean more lending to mid-sized companies. At present the consolidation of regional banks is leading to more focus on consumer lending and lending to large corporates.
Our view is that this consolidation in the market will create more space and opportunities for smaller niche players in the financial sector to provide the kind of products the bigger banks are largely ignoring such as leasing and factoring. It is those niche financial service providers that could be subjects of investment by Aureos.
