The global energy markets have attracted increased attention since the fall of Enron and the subsequent consolidation that the sector has experienced. Mark Hughes of PricewaterhouseCoopers assesses the importance of the mergers and acquisitions industry in energy's continued development.
While most other markets have seen significant falls in M&A activity, electricity and gas has had only a marginal decline in the number of deals, down to 424 in 2002 from 439 the previous year. The total value of these deals also showed a small decline with only a seven per cent drop. Europe emerged as the market to watch with a considerable increase in domestic activity and many of its major players continuing to consolidate their positions.
