Last year was a record-setting year for direct marketing industry merger and acquisition and private equity investment activity. Driven by 550 deals among direct marketing, marketing service and marketing technology companies (a six per cent increase from 2003), total industry transaction volume reached an estimated $27.2 billion in 2004, according to Petsky Prunier. Marketing service sector transactions accounted for 42 percent of the volume with 228 deals (followed by the marketing technology sector with 197 deals and marketers with 125 transactions. Marketers, though accounting for the fewest number of transactions, generated the highest dollar volume with $11.0 billion (the marketing services sector totaled $8.8 billion,and marketing technology, $7.4 billion).
