In this survey of the nanotechnology industry, Lux Research reveals the results of its interviews with executives at the center of nanotech activity in 33 global corporations with more than $5bn in revenue. Among their findings, they disovered that:
Most companies take ad hoc approaches to nanotech. Firms have not converged on an organizational model. Forty-two percent have centralized nanoscale efforts, but an equal share pursues decentralized activity with no coordination. These approaches don’t correlate with industry, region, company size, years of experience with nanoscale, or presence of an explicit nanotechnology strategy. At 45% of companies, R&D “owns” nanotech; the rest vary widely.
Firms know their approaches need work. Barely half of interviewees’ firms have a stated nanotech strategy today. When a strategy does exist, it’s frequently a platitude like “survey the field and move quickly.” Fewer than half rate their approach to nanotech as “very effective.”
Big investments are at risk. Despite today’s laissez-faire approaches, 78% of interviewees say nanotech is a high or top three priority at their companies. The median corporation represented has 55 people working on nanotechnology, spends 5% of R&D funding on research at the nanoscale, and partners with universities, startups, and public sector agencies on nanotech projects – with double-digit increases anticipated on each front through 2006.
