In this IVCJ article, Yaron Polak, a partner at Genesis Partners, and Gil Dibner, principal, discuss the opportunities opening up as a result of the latest web trends. They provide essential principles for VCs to bear in mind in order to successfully find their way through the rapidly changing landscape. The online world is undergoing a revolution that is transforming how people interact on the Web. “Web 2.0” – named after a popular conference that recently took place for the second time in San Francisco – means different things to different people.
This article will attempt to identify some of the more prominent Web trends, such as blogs, social networking and podcasting. With the spate of recent acquisitions, including MySpace.com by News Corp. and Flickr by Yahoo, and Google’s rumored interest in Technorati, the major Internet and media players are taking these trends very seriously, and some might even call it Bubble 2.0.
We believe that the business models underlying the online world are becoming clearer and are convinced that the Israeli VC community cannot ignore the new landscape created by Web 2.0 if we want Israeli companies to become serious players in the online world. Finally, we will attempt to outline some ground rules for these start-ups in order to avoid a new bubble as much as possible.
