What will fixed/mobile convergence mean for consumers and operators? In this IVCJ article, telecom executives tell Tania Hershman how they see the FMC sector developing. The face of telecommunications is changing – again. With the cellular revolution, the telephone metamorphosed from an unmovable object on the hall table to a personal device in one’s pocket.
A call nowadays is made to a person, not to a place. The arrival of voice over IP (VoIP) heralded a new era of PC involvement in voice, data and video transmission. The result: a myriad of ways of calling and being called, with everyone having several telephone numbers, answering services and bits of software that ring.
For operators the situation isn’t ideal. At home, customers have to decide between their fixed line (also called wireline or landline) and mobile phones. And right now it seems that mobile operators are winning. Fixed line operators need a new business strategy. This is where fixed/mobile convergence (FMC) comes in.
