In this study, New Energy Finance focuses on private equity and venture capital investment in clean energy technologies, companies & projects. Looking back in a few years’ time, 2005 will be seen as the moment venture capital and private equity investment in clean energy went mainstream. Overall volume of activity reached $6.7bn, and the year also saw the first substantial exits by investors.
New Energy Finance has undertaken a systematic review of private equity and venture capital investments in the clean energy industry from 2001 to date. We have identified 1446 investors who either have made investments of various types or have stated their intention to do so. We have looked at 497 funds whose remit covers investment in clean energy.
In total we have identified 746 private equity and venture capital investments, totalling $15.1bn, and 717 development stage companies around the world, of which 502 have raised venture investment.
