Internet video broadcasting did not achieve much popularity in its early days due to low video quality, frequent interruptions caused by limited capacity of the public Internet and low bandwidth of dial-up modems. Today, though, Internet broadcasting is getting a more enthusiastic reception. In this IVCJ article, Dror Gill, CEO of Gamdala – a consultancy specializing in mobile and multimedia technologies and services – and Eyal Niv, Managing Director at Giza Venture Capital, explain why. Lately, broadband connectivity and improved codecs have led to a comeback for video streaming over the Internet.
With more and more people upgrading their Internet connection to support 1-2 megabits per second, and the latest video codecs such as Microsoft WM9 and H.264 enabling compression ratios up to four times better than the legacy MPEG-2 codec, it is now possible to view streaming video over the Internet at a quality that is above most people’s threshold.
