This Practical Law Company article describes the private equity market in the UK jurisdiction and looks at issues such as the opportunities for investment available to institutional investors such as pension funds, insurance companies and banks.
The UK has a sophisticated and mature private equity market. A wide range of independent UK, US and pan-European private equity houses and bank-owned private equity houses operate in the market, including:
- Generalist funds that invest in buyouts and technology or other venture capital transactions.
- Specialist funds that invest in, for example, biotech, healthcare, telecommunications or other technology areas.
- Buyout funds that:
- only invest in buyouts; or
- specialise in larger or mid-market deals.
- Secondary funds that purchase secondary interests in other funds or secondary portfolios.
- Funds of funds that invest in other private equity funds.
