The climate for growth entrepreneurship in Europe19/08/2002. Source: 3i/VentureLab.
There has been increasing interest in recent years in the topic of entrepreneurship in general and what is called growth entrepreneurship in particular. This 3i Venturelab report sets out to explore a wide variety of indicators relevant to the different phases of the entrepreneurial process and confirms that overall, the US still offers a more amenable environment for entrepreneurs. This does not imply that the US is perfect, neither does the report suggest that Europe should strive to replicate the US model. The comparison is suggested as a means for European countries to measure whether their own individual balance is adequate.
Most countries have started to recognise the importance of fostering an environment in which growth entrepreneurship can thrive, and are actively seeking ways of improving the situation. The UK, Ireland, Spain and The Netherlands tend to stand out as the more favourable climates, while Germany and France still have further to go. In order to promote entrepreneurship the report also identifies a series of challenges for European policy makers, and offers some suggested agenda items for governments, the academic research community and entrepreneurs themselves.
