M&A Review - 200205/02/2003. Source: Dealogic.
The past 12 months have been a struggle for those reliant on the mergers and acquisitions business. Volumes and number of bids were well down on the previous year.' So began Dealogic's M&A Review of 2001. The sentiment could equally apply to 2002, according to its yearly review.
There were 23,611 deals announced in 2002, a figure down by ten per cent on the previous year. The value of these deals stood at $1,400bn, which was down by 24 per cent on the year before. The flow of mega-deals is also drying up with only ten deals of $10bn or over - a figure that totalled 21 in 2001 and 42 in 2000. The still rumbling effects of 11 September and the renewed worries of war with Iraq have augmented the downward spiral.
