A total of $4.2bn was invested in 667 US early-stage companies in the third quarter of 2003. The results represent a slight decline of eight per cent by value and five per cent by volume when compared to the previous quarter, according to the latest PricewaterhouseCoopers’ MoneyTree Survey. For the first time in seven years biotechnology was the number one industry, capturing $873m, and displacing software as the leading category. Investments in biotechnology companies increased 31 per cent from the previous quarter and 88 per cent from a year ago.
