In the face of challenging exit conditions, the private equity industry is seeking to gain liquidity and return funds to limited partners via alternative realisation strategies. These include secondary buy-outs, refinancings, dividend returns and the development of new exit routes such as Canadian Income Trusts for US private equity houses, explains KPMG. In the face of this shortfall in liquidity there is likely to be a renewed emphasis on portfolio management, greater use of external advisers to identify and implement realisation opportunities and an increased de-risk strategy to advance liquidity back to limited partners.
