The Bowmark Entrepreneurs’ Index, from UK private equity firm Bowmark Capital, is the first in a series of surveys of small to medium-sized businesses in the UK. Companies surveyed in September and October 2007 are optimistic about prospects for their own businesses in the next 12 months. The companies surveyed are generally positive about private equity. A total of 86 per cent said their relationship with these investors was good, while 71 per cent said private equity backers had set realistic targets, and 58 per cent felt they provided useful guidance on strategy. More than half felt that private equity investment would deliver the best growth for entrepreneurial companies, against just 12 per cent who said that a stock exchange listing was a better route to growth.
