Global venture investment breaks through the $32bn figure 13/12/2006. With $25.39bn invested after the first three quarters of the year, venture capital activity in the US, Europe, China and Israel in 2006 is poised to hit a five-year high and register the highest annual investments since 2001, according to a global year end analysis by VentureOne and Ernst & Young. This year, investment is expected to top $32bn after the fourth quarter.

SCM annual exit analysis - 2005 06/09/2006. The year 2005 saw a continuation of the high level of exit activity from the previous year, finds SCM. European distributions reached €14.5bn, a 32 per cent increase compared to the year 2004. In the US, distributions amounted to €54.6 bn indicating a stagnation on a high level as the year-on-year increase amounted to only two per cent. Overall, global private equity distributions increased by eight per cent year on year.

Confidence levels and valuation expectations of mid-market VCs for the next twelve months have dipped compared to the beginning of the year, according to quarterly research carried out by Grant Thornton.

This is roughly in line with last year's figure, and is approximately in line with May 2006. On a cumulative basis, the Headline Transaction Index is 20 per cent ahead compared to June last year. So it's hardly a runaway market, simply healthy growth in a sector which is still recovering from the worst downturn in its (short) history.

Entrepreneurs in middle-income countries are beginning to catch-up to their counterparts in richer economies by tapping into technologies unavailable to them just a year ago, according to the seventh annual Global Entrepreneurship Monitor. Directed by Babson College and London Business School, the report is the largest annual measure of entrepreneurial activity worldwide, compiled by 150 scholars from 35 countries.

The equity risk capital market for young companies in Scotland 2000-2004 18/04/2006. This is the second of Scottish Enterprise's annual studies of the risk capital market in Scotland, tracking all risk capital investments in young Scottish companies since 2000. In particular, the authors say their report demonstrates the on-going need for Scottish Enterprise intervention to work to improve the supply of finance for growing companies.

Q4 2005 and full year 2005 21/03/2006. Capital raised by Israeli high-tech companies reached $1.34bn in 2005, reports the IVC, with an 8 per cent year-to year decline due to a slow fourth quarter.

US private equity fundraising activity surpassed 2004 in first three quarters of 2005 24/02/2006. The private equity fundraising climate remained robust in the third quarter of 2005 with forty-five venture funds raising $5.4bn and forty-five buyout and mezzanine funds fetching $16.8bn, according to Thomson Venture Economics and the US National Venture Capital Association. 
US M&A activity continues to drive exit market 14/02/2006. Q3 of last year saw a doubling of venture-backed IPO activity, says an NVCA and Thomson exit poll, but this was not enough to recover from a dismal first half for 2005.
