Ripplewood Holdings to buy Japanese unit from Vodafone

Click here for the latest news, views and interviews in the clean energy investor communityPresident of Vodafone Group's Japan Telecom Holdings Co, William Morrow, has confirmed that the division is in talks with Ripplewood Holdings LLC, a New York-based private equity fund, to sell its Japanese fixed-line phone business.

‘We are in discussions with parties including Ripplewood to sell our fixed-line phone business in Japan,' Morrow told Bloomberg. Japan Telecom Holdings plans to focus more strongly on its more profitable core mobile phone business.

Some of the more adventurous US private equity firms have been exploring opportunities in Japan for some time now but there has been very little activity to date. Observers are keenly watching these developments for a sign that conditions are improving.
