HSBC Private Equity has announced the sale of Ampafrance, a manufacturer of baby-products, to Canada-based Dorel Industries, a consumer products manufacturer. The total value of the transaction is $240m.
HSBC acquired Ampafrance in June 2001. It owns four major brands, Bébé Confort, Monbébé, Babidéal and BabyRelax. HSBC said that for the year 2002 Ampafrance generated sales of E175m, up from E145m in 2000. The company has manufacturing facilities in Fr!nce, Italy and Portugal and employs more than 1,000 people.
The exit will come as welcome news to private equity players across the world, as liquidity is becoming an increasing concern.
Trade buyers are widely reluctant to make acquisitions at present, preoccupied with the health of their balance sheets, and the weakness of public markets has slammed the IPO window shut.
