Munich-based venture firm Deutsche Venture Capital has announced the appointment of ex-director of Aventis Venture Activities Dr Thomas Taapken as a partner and director of Breslin Biotech Dr David Karabelnik as a consultant.
Dr Jörg Neerman, managing partner of DVC, underlined DVC's commitment to the life science sector, saying: ‘We continue to build our experienced team of life science experts and thereby will be able to even better and more competently support young companies.'
Taapken worked on behalf Aventis Cropscience as Venture Capital Manager at Burrill & Co, the US-based venture firm, from 1998-2001.
Karabelnik joins DVC as a consultant and has more than 25 years of experience in the life sciences field.
DVC was founded in 1998 and has around E300m under management.
The life sciences sector is one of the only corners of the venture capital industry that has not crumbled into a state of near paralysis since the implosion of the technology bubble in 2000. Although the value of life sciences investment fell in 2002, it increased its share of total investment in both the US and Europe.
