US early-stage technology venture capital firm, Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ), is to launch a Canadian fund in partnership with Dr Ilse Treurnicht of Primaxis Technology Ventures. DFJ plans to enter the Canadian market with a fund targeted at US$100m.
‘We are delighted about this opportunity to create a strong presence in Canada,' said Tim Draper, founder and managing director of DFJ. ‘Canada is a key global technology cluster that has generated many important advances in life sciences and information technology.'
‘We believe the Canadian high-tech sector will continue to produce a terrific flow of investment opportunities. We are excited to be partnering with Ilse Treurnicht and her superb team from Primaxis. Their expertise and experience will enrich our growing network,' Draper continued.
The partnership is the latest addition to the DFJ network. In the last nine years DFJ has created a broad network of venture capital partnerships. The current network consists of 70 venture capital professionals, across 23 regions and incorporates $3.2bn under management.
Mary Macdonald, CEO of MacDonald & Associates, which monitors private equity trends and activities in Canada, described the presence of DFJ in Canada as ‘welcome news for the Canadian venture capital community'.
‘The participation of US investors in the Canadian market has dropped during the past year, but this partnership signals a growing recognition of excellent Canadian investment opportunities coupled with strong venture management teams to exploit them.'
