European venture capital investment fell 23 per cent in 2003 on the previous year to stand 82 per cent below its peak level in 2000, according to the latest figures from VentureOne and Ernst and Young. There was little sign of a recovery in the breakdown, which saw the third consecutive quarterly drop.
There was just E3.470bn invested in 2003, compared with E4.514bn in 2002 and E19.691bn in 2000. The fourth quarter saw E855mn invested, down from E871mn in the third quarter. The number of deals in 2003 fell to 1039 from 1500 in 2002.
The sector breakdown showed a familiar pattern, with healthcare investing much more robust than the other technology sectors. Biopharmaceuticals, in particular, was only 17 per cent lower than in 2002.
