Canadian private equity investment fell from $2.5bn in 2002 to $1.5bn in 2003, according to the latest industry statistics from the Canadian Venture Capital Association (CVCA) and Macdonald & Associates.
The volume of investment activity remained comparable with the previous year but the average value of investments fell considerably. Funds raised by Canadian private equity firms also fell from $3.2bn in 2002 to $2bn last year.
'These declines reflect difficult circumstances in several parts of the industry,' said Dr. Robin Louis, president of the CVCA and president of Ventures West Management. 'Reduced capital raised by funds, together with uncertain market outlooks for portfolio companies, has made venture investors cautious.'
