French private equity firm, Wendel Investissement, has acquired a controlling stake in publishing group Editis from French conglomerate Lagardere in a transaction valued at E660m.
Editis is an educational and consumer publishing unit formerly owned by Vivendi Universal. Vivendi sold the company to Lagardere last year on the condition that Lagadere sell at least 60 per cent of the company because of competition concerns. A number of private equity firms were also interested in acquiring Editis at that time, including Blackstone and BNP Paribas, who submitted a joint offer, according to a report by Le Monde.
Wendel Investissement's last major acquisition took place in 2002 when it teamed up with Kohlberg Kravis Roberts to acquire electric products company Legrand for E3.7bn. Wendel is a family office, responsible for investing the fortunes of the Wendel family, which founded a steel empire in the Alsace region in 1704.
