US private equity firm The Carlyle Group and Japanese technology company Kyocera are to place a $2.1bn offer for wireless service provider DDI Pocket. The transaction has been under negotiation for around two years, but the parties involved have only just moved into exclusive talks.
The proposed transaction would see Carlyle taking control of DDI with a 60 per cent stake, Kyocera would acquire 30 per cent of the company, while KDDI, the Japanese telecommunications company that owns DDI, would retain a ten per cent stake, according to a report by the Financial Times.
Carlyle closed its first dedicated buy-out fund for Japan with $470m in January this year. But the firm has had a presence in Japan since 2000 and is one of the most active private equity groups in the region. Carlyle's Japanese portfolio companies include eAccess, a broadband access provider, and Asahi Security, a security services group.
