US life sciences venture firm Quaker BioVentures has recruited former Johnson & Johnson executive Thomas Amick to its advisory board. Amick was most recently vice president of J&J Development and also served as vice president of the Johnson & Johnson oncology franchise.
'Amick was chosen to join Quaker's advisory board because of his commercial background,' said Quaker principal, Richard Kollender. 'If you look at the advisory board, we have a lot of representatives with highly scientific backgrounds, but science needs to be able to be monetised to ensure return on investments.'
Amick will join Frank Baldino, founder and chairman of Cephalon; Paul Brucker, president of Thomas Jefferson University; Gerard Burrow, president and CEO of Sea Research Foundation; Richard Caruso, chairman of Integra LifeSciences Holdings Corporation; Hyman Kahn, partner at Healthcare Executive Partners; Stephen Roth, CEO of Immune Control; Hubert Schoemaker, chairman of Neuronyx; and Tadataka Yamada, chairman of research and development at GlaxoSmithKline.
Quaker invests between $5m and $20m in health care start-ups in the US. The firm is planning to close its debut fund in August of this year but has already made seven investments in six companies and hopes to close investments in two additional companies in the next quarter.
