Former British prime minister quits Carlyle

Click here for the latest news, views and interviews in the clean energy investor communityJohn Major, former British prime minister, has stepped down as European chairman of Carlyle Group. The move reflects a cultural shift in the private equity firm famed for its political connections, with the group now appearing to favour the appointment of advisers from the world of business.

This change of emphasis within Carlyle was also evident when Lou Gerstner, former chairman of IBM, became Carlyle's global chairman in late 2002, succeeding Frank Carlucci, the former US defence secretary, who remains an adviser.

George HW Bush, the former US president, is also no longer a Carlyle adviser. But the group still has links with James Baker, former US secretary of state, and Arthur Levitt, former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, according to the Financial Times.

Major joined Carlyle in 1998, the year the firm opened a London office, and became European chairman in 2001. His role included responsibility for promoting the Carlyle brand within Europe.
