The former US defence secretary William Cohen is to form a merchant banking firm to broker industry mergers and plans to raise $300m to invest in defence companies. The new firm will be called TCG Financial Partners.
Cohen has recruited Edward Carter, former head of Bank of America, to lead the venture. He also plans to assemble a team from his consulting firm, the Cohen Group, including retired US general Joseph Ralston and George Robertson, a former NATO secretary-general.
Cohen and Carter believe that constraints on the defence budget and the Pentagon's demand for new technologies will drive contractors to sell business units and buy smaller technology firms, according to a report by Bloomberg.
The firm will invest in companies with revenues of between $25m and $150m.
