US financial services group Piper Jaffray has spun its healthcare venture team off into a separate and independent unit called Sightline Partners. The new firm will continue to manage the four Piper Jaffray venture capital funds, which together comprise $225m of committed capital.
Sightline will be headed by Buzz Benson, the present Piper Jaffray Ventures managing director. He will be joined by Maureen Harder, Ken Higgins and Heath Lukatch. The firm will maintain its offices in San Francisco and Minneapolis.
Benson explained the move as a natural consequence of the trend of recent years for financial institutions to spin off their captive private equity units.'Our progression to full independence is a natural step given the changes in the financial services industry over the last few years,' he said.
