He will be based in Boston and joins as a vice president.

The group closed its second fund of funds earlier this year with commitments of E1bn and is now actively trying to build the same sort of presence as a fund and co-investor that it has achieved in Europe.

Jonny Maxwell, chief executive of Standard Life Investments (Private Equity), said: 'I'm sure Rob will prove to be a great addition to our expanding Boston operation. His knowledge of the venture capital and buy-out markets, as well as his transactional experience in direct investments, will deepen and broaden the expertise of the North American team.'

Most recently, Hatch was employed at Argo Global Capital, a venture capital firm in Massachussets. He will report to managing director Dan Cahill.
