UK-based listed private equity firm 3i plans a big increase in its investment activity in India and is in the early stages of hiring a team in the region, according to Chris Rowlands, head of group markets. The firm may invest as much as $150m a year in around deals, he said in an interview with Reuters.
'We have had long experience of entering new markets and it seems to us that there is a great medium term opportunity in India,' he said.
The largest international player at present in Indian private equity is the US giant Warburg Pincus but other groups have begun surveying opportunities in the region over the past 12 months.
At the same time, institutional investors' interest in the region has grown considerably. It has been driven on the one hand by a string of highly profitable exits and on the other by mounting concerns about the level of competition in the mature markets of the US and Europe.
