Baring Private Equity Partners Espana, a member of Baring Private Equity International and a subsidiary of Caixa Catalunya, has closed its second Spanish fund with commitments of €97m. Baring Iberia II will invest in small and mid-sized companies in Spain and Portugal.
The group's first fund closed in 1998 with €60m and four of its six investors have reinvested in the new fund.
Jose Angel Sarasa, Baring Espana's managing partner, said: 'Spain has experienced 20 years of spectacular economic and social growth yet has a relatively low proportion of GDP allocated to private equity investments. Our success represents a positive signal of increasing investor interest and stronger market growth in Spain's private equity market.'
Baring Private Equity International was founded in 1984 and bought itself out from its parent earlier this year. It is composed of a series of regional investment teams, each of which owns their respective management company but can continue to use the Baring brand.
The group has operations in Western Europe, Central Europe, Russia, India, Asia and Latin America. Caixa Catalunya, the third largest savings bank in Spain, bought a 45 per cent stake in Baring Espana in 2002.
