The European venture sector saw a marked improvement in liquidity in 2004 to record its highest number of flotations since 2000, according to the VentureOne European Liquidity Report. There were 34 IPOs worth a combined €712m, compared with just nine raising €129m in 2003.
The 2004 IPO companies also performed better in the public market than in preceding years. The median premoney valuation of the European IPO companies was €39.5m, up from €26.9m last year.
The UK accounted for the largest share of last year's IPOs, with 23 raising a total of €409m. Norway was the second most active country in terms of the number of IPOs, completing five and raising €46m.
The improvement in the exit environment for the venture sector is expected to be reflected in the fundraising fortunes of venture firms over the next 12 months, easing a long period of extremely hostile conditions.
