Eric Archambeau, a French native with 23 year of experience in founding, financing and investing in young technology companies, joins Munich-based venture capital firm Wellington Partners as a general partner. In his new role, he will focus on internet services, enterprise software and semiconductor opportunities.
Wellington also wants Archambeau to further increase the firm's ability to support the expansion of portfolio companies to the US.
Wellington partner Bart Markus said, 'With his remarkable network in the United States and Europe, Eric ideally complements our team.'
Archambeau co-founded his first company in Silicon Valley in 1982. He also worked for Atlas Venture in California and started Benchmark Capital's European business as a founding partner in London.
His appointment reflects the growing trend among European venture firms to recruit professionals with US-style venture investment experience. That means, in particular, experience of setting up and building businesses. Historically, a very high proportion of European venture professionals have come from consulting or banking backgrounds, in marked contrast to their US peers.
Wellington Partners, founded in 1991, invests in start-ups throughout Europe in the information and communication technology and life science sectors. The firm manages total funds of around €350m. Wellington's latest technology fund announced a first closing on €85m in December 2004.
To date, Wellington Partners has invested in over 70 companies and has sold 21 of them at a profit, in four cases through an IPO.
