Richard Barton, the founder of online travel service Expedia, will join US early-stage high-technology venture capital firm Benchmark Capital as a venture partner to focus on expanding Benchmark's internet portfolio. Barton founded Expedia inside of Microsoft in 1995.
Barton is currently the chairman and CEO of internet start-up Zillow, which he founded with a former Expedia executive in 2004. He sits on the boards of Netflix and AtomShockwave.
Bill Gurley, general partner at Benchmark, said, 'There are great entrepreneurs and great executives, and Rich is one of those rare individuals who is both.'
Benchmark Capital, founded in 1995, manages more than $2.5bn in committed capital. Benchmark's portfolio includes franchise companies such as eBay, Juniper Networks and Red Hat.
