Business confidence in Europe has become stronger. It has climbed from +23 to +38 on 3i's quarterly European Enterprise Barometer Index, which measures private companies' confidence in business, political and economic climates. The weighted index for Europe is now at the highest level it has been since its peak of +49 in 2000.
The most positive and consistent figures remain to come from the Nordic countries (+110). France and Germany have seen a particularly strong increase, expressed in the Index being at its highest in four and five years respectively. In France it climbed up 17 points to +34 and in Germany 43 points to +95. In Spain and the UK the Index has gone up but optimism remained relatively low compared with the rest of Europe. The only country in which the index has not risen is Italy.
The 3i European Barometer is compiled every quarter from the responses of a sample of companies in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the Nordic region in which 3i has an investment.
3i focuses on buy-outs, growth capital and venture capital, and invests across Europe, in the United States and in Asia Pacific.
