Canadian venture capital investment activity grew strongly to Can$627m in the second quarter of 2005, up 53 per cent from the Can$409m invested by the industry in the second quarter of 2004 and also up sharply from the Can$326m invested in Q1 of 2005, according to Canada's Venture Capital and Private Equity Association. The Can$627m represent the largest quarterly investment in a second quarter in four years and the single largest quarterly industry disbursement since the fourth quarter of 2003.
In the second quarter the ten largest deals captured 41 per cent of the total capital invested, as compared to the 19 per cent share of the ten largest deals in all of 2004.
While investments rose, new capital commitments to venture capital declined to Can$155m in Q2 2005 from Can$1,046m in Q1 2005 and Can$317m in Q2 2004. 'Having disbursements greater than capital raised continues a worrisome trend,' said Dr Robin Louis, president of the CVCA and president of Ventures West.
'The demand for capital from high quality firms appears to be strong but the industry's ability to provide the funding will necessarily decline unless the industry is able to increase the amount of capital that it raises,' Dr Louis added.
